スタンフォード大学リーダーシップセミナーの様子を生徒の日記とともにお伝えします。
Day 4 (August 2nd)
Today we had a lecture given by Dr.Stephan Marphy-Shigematsu. It was the lecture about focusing on what I am and why I am here. His talk was spiritual, and he let us notice what to do when we experience failure. After the lecture we went to Windhover to meditate. We spent some time silently meditating, so I could concentrate on the program. Then, we went to the fountain in the Stanford in order to play in the water. Though it was hot today, playing in the water made us feel a bit cold. In the afternoon we played the game called “buzzer squeeze exercising”. We enjoyed the game, and Dr.Ong told us that it helped us improve our teamwork. Next, we designed a new water bottle. There were many crazy ideas, so it was fun to see various types of ideas. Today was the third day of Stanford Leadership Program. In the morning, we presented individual goals to everyone in English on the way to Stanford University. My goal was to strive as hard as possible to understand lecture and I want to ask some questions about the deepest part of his lecture. In the class, we had a lecture by Dr. Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu. He taught us about Mindfulness. I learned there are a lot of students who want to know the purpose and the meaning of life. Therefore, Mindfulness is very important to remind them of their beginner’s mind and accept their weakness. People learn from mistakes and then they grow up. Mindfulness is a good tool for that. After that lecture, we meditated. I thought it was a very good way to relax and to purify my heart. After that, we ate lunch and did an activity to design a crazy water bottle. Everyone presented crazy ideas so it was very funny to listen to them. In the evening, we thought seriously about our own talent. Mr. Kimura taught us about how to discover our talent. First, there are some talents inside of us, however, it is normal for us therefore, we have to notice those talents. Second, there are some talents in what we are not good at. Also, I learned humans have an ability to “choose”, so we can choose our own world. Today, I had a lot of important lectures and I want to keep trying what I learned today. (S.A H1)

Today, my goal is to manage to expand on the topic. I could achieve the goal in the activity and we had some free time. I had a lecture by Dr.Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu. I was taught a lot of things by him. For example, I watched a story about a rugby player. He had a bossy attitude to those in the team. One time in a game, he had made a big mistake and his team had missed a chance in the game because of him. After that, he suffered a lot but grew up in the end. I felt that we can learn and grow from mistakes. Also, Dr.Shigematsu talked about “The Strongest man”. The man is showing our bad points about himself and if he is in a pinch, he can ask anyone for help without hurting his pride. I sympathized with his opinion. Also after lunch, I had an activity by Dr.Ong. The activity is called, “buzzer squeeze exercise”. It was difficult a little to remember the feeling that I was squeezed by the next person, but it was is very fun. In this activity, I could talk to mentors a lot and expand on some topics with some questions in English. After going back to our hotel, I was taught by Mr. Kimura. I thought that it is important to control how to feel in his lecture. I learned a lot of things today. I want to learn more in the rest of the time we have here. (Y.T H1)
