Day 2

Today is the 2nd day of our training program. It was very exciting and I experienced a lot of things that l had never experienced in Japan. In the morning,l had breakfast with my friends. Yesterday, l was scared of talking to clerks, so l could not got meals that l wanted to eat. However, l tried to talk to clerk in order to order meals, so l enjoyed breakfast today. After breakfast, we had the first English class. I decided not to be afraid of making mistakes, so I spoke in English as much as I could. After the class, I had lunch and went around the campus. There were a lot of buildings and the campus was very big. I had never seen a college like UCLA, so I was surprised at the size of the college. I was tired at that time, but we had more English class after dinner. I had to do my best, but l could not do it. After the class, we had a meeting to look back on what I tried to do and what I couldn’t do today. I thought I could try to speak English as much as I could in the morning, but I could not do that in the evening, so l am going to speak English more tomorrow. I will have a lot of chances to speak, so I don’t want to have any regrets about this program. I will do my best until I go back to Japan. I hope my English skills will develop before I come home. (A.G. H1)

On 6th August, we had the second day in the program. Actually, today wast he first day that we spent all day in UCLA. We had an English class in the morning and had a campus tour, interview activity, bought a souvenir, and had a “leadership seminar” in the afternoon. It was the first time to meet Patryk, who taught us in this course. He is from Poland but he speaks English as well as a native speaker. We were taught English and what leadership was by him. His lesson was very exciting because our English was not perfect but he followed us and he didn’t negate anything we said. He said to us, “Just try.” and “Do not worry mistakes.” I spoke positively when he asked us some questions in the morning class, but I could not speak positively in the afternoon because we were so tired from some activities before the class. Therefore, I am going to speak more positively all day tomorrow. In the campus tour, we had a look around the UCLA campus. I was surprised because UCLA is very large and there are a lot of beautiful buildings and fountains. The four big buildings at the center of the UCLA campus are the oldest and they were built in 1919. In the campus, there are many roads, stairs, slopes and buildings, so it was like amaze for me but UCLA students said that they remembered all the roads. Yesterday,on the first day, I could not order to clerks fluently and could not understand what clerks said; however I was able to do it today. When I had a conversation well, I realized that English was a tool to have a communication again and I want to study English more and improve my English ability. When I interviewed to UCLA students, some of them gave some advice for high school students. So I keep it in my mind and I’m going to do in the rest of this program better than the previous day! (Y.S. H1)

Day 1
On 5th August, we left Japan for Los Angeles. At that time, I couldn’t image what UCLA is like. After we arrived at UCLA, I had lunch at a burger shop. But, I made a mistake there. I couldn’t understand what the clerk said, so I said “OK.” Finally, I bought a hamburger and large size Coca-Cola although I don’t like Coca-Cola very much. The mistake became my good motivation of learning how to communicate with people. I don’t want to do it again, so I decided to challenge communication with UCLA students. After the orientation, we could have dinner between 5 and 8 P.M. But I couldn’t have dinner because I slept during our dinner time. So I ate potato chips that I bought at the airport, but it wasn’t food! It was salt!! When I am writing this essay, I am feeling so hungry. Tomorrow, I want to get Tauros in Pokemon Go!!! (T.I. H2)

The day 8/5 was full of the memories of mine. This was nearly the first time to go abroad for me. And I didn’t remember how to get on an airplane because I was a child at that time. When the airplane which we got on began to move, I was so excited. I will never forget that my heart was beating. After arrived at Los Angeles airport, we went to UCLA. As soon as we reached the dormitories in UCLA, I had lunch with my friends, Yoshiki, Lei, Taichiro. We decided to eat hamburgers, but I couldn’t speak English clearly and listened to the clerk’s explanation correctly. So I regretted showing my shameful behavior. I wanted to speak more; therefore I decided to study English harder. By the way, the hamburger was very big. As a result, I didn’t want to eat dinner. I was surprised at the big hamburger. But, when I began to fall in sleep, Yoshiki said to me that he wanted to go to eat with me at the cafeteria. The cafeteria was so beautiful for high school students to enter and relax. Its system was buffet. There were a lot of dishes including soft drinks, ice creams, and chocolate cakes. I like sweet desserts. I felt this cafeteria was heaven. I remembered today’s orientation that Ms.Younji gave to us. She was a really kind person. During the orientation, we introduced ourselves at first. Mr. Kobayashi recommended a movie, “Identity”. It seemed to be interesting. Maybe I’m going to watch the movie. After that, we played a game like a broken telephone. We had a nice time. The day was only the first day of this program. But I was really moved by the day. I won’t forget this day. (T.T. H2)
