Day 7(August 5th)
Today was the last day of this program. In the morning, we went to UC Berkeley and walked around the campus with a mentor. The campus was so large, therefore I got tired, but I really enjoyed walking around there. I especially liked the creative and interesting works made by Berkeley students in the museum. Also our mentor was powerful and she showed us a lot of places. Then two members from the junior high school third grade made a presentation and it was so fantastic. In the afternoon we came back to Stanford University, and I made a presentation for the Japanese researchers in Stanford. Although I practiced very hard until yesterday, I felt so nervous. As a result I managed to do my presentation somehow. Moreover I received a lot of advice about my research from them. I thought that it was worth giving a presentation. Four students after me made presentations, and they also received good advice. Then the researchers showed us their laboratory. I was so excited, because I have never seen such a big laboratory. And we went to a store that most people didn’t know about. I bought a lot of goods, therefore I was satisfied with shopping. At night, we had a dinner party at an Indian restaurant near the hotel with Colin and Glenn. And we celebrated birthdays for two students and Mr.Kimura. A lot of things happened, and it was a very fun party. After dinner, we reflected on the whole program and each of them shared their thoughts. We will come back to Japan tomorrow. (S.K H1)

Day 6 (August 4th)
It is August 4th. Today, we have to introduce our product to many people. We thought about the problem to the solution we want to improve around the world. And we discussed a lot since we came to America, so we could do our best in the presentation. The product we made was sustainable, so I think we will be able to realize our plan someday. We could discussed the problem of own product, and learn a lot of creative ideas. And also we asked questions about the problems each other had, so we could notice many things that we can’t always notice. Therefore, we could know what the problem for us is. In addition, we made a photo essay yesterday and presented today. Mentors also presented their own, so I could know more about them. And I thought we could use our time effectively in Stanford University! I learned a lot not only from the professors and guest speakers but also mentors. Mentors also said to me “Making mistakes is OK” and “Any idea is OK.” So I could tell them what I want to do smoothly and I could change myself in Stanford. I think I want to thank them! (H.K H1)

August 4th, 2019
Today was the last day of Dr. Collin’s program. We did presentations, shared photo essays, and ate lunch at a Chinese restaurant. I’m going to explain about these things. Firstly, We presented solutions of various problems. Our team presented about the food waste problem. We suggested making electricity from waste food trash. It was hard to think about how we can make a creative product and to think which parts we should emphasize. We could cooperate with each other so we could make a presentation that everyone was able to understand. Secondly, we shared photo essays. It is to make 5~10 slides and write 1 or 2 sentences. There were a lot of interesting videos. I could feel happiness. Thirdly, for today’s lunch we ate at a Chinese restaurant with the mentors and Mr. Colin and Mr. Glenn. It was the last chance to talk with the mentors so I asked some questions to the mentors. Also our teacher’s story was very interesting. I enjoyed lunch time. In addition, we recorded a message to our future selves on our cell phone and received certificate of completions. I could spend some fruitful days and really enjoyed 5 days! (H.T H1)

Day 5 (August 3rd)
The fourth day of the training and fifth day after we left Japan. The program entered the final stage. Today’s guest presenter Jen gave a talk on Human Behavior. When you want to explain your opinion, you shouldn’t force the opinion of the majority onto the minority. You just need to be able to make a way of explaining it so that the other party can be convinced and notice something. This was very impressive for me.
Tomorrow there will be a closing presentation. Presentations are a great opportunity to communicate with audiences or to interact with opinions which are different from mine. I will do my best to make the most of what I have learned in the past few days, including today’s lecture. (R.K H1)

Today was most likely the most productive day out of all the days that I have been here so far. Although I did sleep a little too much in the morning, I do know how to improve my sleeping habits nor moreover the solution to not let this ever happen again. Back to the actual camp, we started off with a talk from Ms. Jen Wang and she talked about human behavior. We discussed about whether peer pressure or big problems can control or convince human beings to do things more and I personally had a good time, but more so I was able to understand more about how human beings think and how people can be controlled to an extent in a sense.
After having the talk from Ms. Jen Wang, we did an elevator pitch practice/exercise. I talked about how my friends would want to get a scuba license with me but then they would make excuses for them not being able to come to a pool with me for training in order to meet the requirements for the PADI certification test. Next up was lunch and I personally talked a bit more about the whole scuba thing with Dr. Collin. I actually had lunch with him and got some really valuable advice from him and stories from him. I was surprised to notice the fact that the type of opportunities that he had and what I am have had are quite similar.
I went back to Y2E2 and we started working on the egg parachute exercise. I think a lot of us were able to use the “quick thinking” that we learnt in Dr. Collin’s class in the sense that we had all this material to drop an egg from the 2nd floor to the basement floor, but we only had 10 minutes to make everything.
As an overall summary of today, I think I was able to enjoy this day in the most meaningful way. Such as enjoying learning, having fun, progress wise, and communication wise. Today was a good day and I hope that tomorrow will be as good, if not better. Tomorrow is the day that we as a group give a presentation to Dr. Collin about the product that we made, and give our photo essays in. Truthfully? Yes I am a little nervous… However I’m quite confident at the same time in the sense that I have great confidence in my team and myself for being in the team. The team that we were all chosen in order to have these experiences. A team of International and Medical science. The main thing that I’ve been thinking about throughout the entire trip so far, is that I really hope in the near future, we’ll have even more opportunities for the medical science section and the international section to collaborate in the name of education, Hiroogakuen and most importantly in the name of 2 sections with the brightest minds. (E.A M3)

Today I had some lessons and I was really impressed with the programs. First, we had Ms.Wang’s class. She talked about saving the world to change people’s mind, and she told us about veganism and recycling problem. My parents are owners of a vegan restaurant, and they usually say things like in a Ms.Wang’s story. So I really have sympathy for her way and I was so happy. When I go back Japan, I’ll tell her story to my parents. Also I really enjoyed the art museum too. I couldn’t read almost all the sentences but I could feel something from the arts. One of my favorites is some statues in India. It was beautiful and a little mysterious. (A.S M3)

Day 4 (August 2nd)
Today we had a lecture given by Dr.Stephan Marphy-Shigematsu. It was the lecture about focusing on what I am and why I am here. His talk was spiritual, and he let us notice what to do when we experience failure. After the lecture we went to Windhover to meditate. We spent some time silently meditating, so I could concentrate on the program. Then, we went to the fountain in the Stanford in order to play in the water. Though it was hot today, playing in the water made us feel a bit cold. In the afternoon we played the game called “buzzer squeeze exercising”. We enjoyed the game, and Dr.Ong told us that it helped us improve our teamwork. Next, we designed a new water bottle. There were many crazy ideas, so it was fun to see various types of ideas. (H.M H1)

Today was the third day of Stanford Leadership Program. In the morning, we presented individual goals to everyone in English on the way to Stanford University. My goal was to strive as hard as possible to understand lecture and I want to ask some questions about the deepest part of his lecture. In the class, we had a lecture by Dr. Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu. He taught us about Mindfulness. I learned there are a lot of students who want to know the purpose and the meaning of life. Therefore, Mindfulness is very important to remind them of their beginner’s mind and accept their weakness. People learn from mistakes and then they grow up. Mindfulness is a good tool for that. After that lecture, we meditated. I thought it was a very good way to relax and to purify my heart. After that, we ate lunch and did an activity to design a crazy water bottle. Everyone presented crazy ideas so it was very funny to listen to them. In the evening, we thought seriously about our own talent. Mr. Kimura taught us about how to discover our talent. First, there are some talents inside of us, however, it is normal for us therefore, we have to notice those talents. Second, there are some talents in what we are not good at. Also, I learned humans have an ability to “choose”, so we can choose our own world. Today, I had a lot of important lectures and I want to keep trying what I learned today. (S.A H1)

Today, my goal is to manage to expand on the topic. I could achieve the goal in the activity and we had some free time. I had a lecture by Dr.Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu. I was taught a lot of things by him. For example, I watched a story about a rugby player. He had a bossy attitude to those in the team. One time in a game, he had made a big mistake and his team had missed a chance in the game because of him. After that, he suffered a lot but grew up in the end. I felt that we can learn and grow from mistakes. Also, Dr.Shigematsu talked about “The Strongest man”. The man is showing our bad points about himself and if he is in a pinch, he can ask anyone for help without hurting his pride. I sympathized with his opinion. Also after lunch, I had an activity by Dr.Ong. The activity is called, “buzzer squeeze exercise”. It was difficult a little to remember the feeling that I was squeezed by the next person, but it was is very fun. In this activity, I could talk to mentors a lot and expand on some topics with some questions in English. After going back to our hotel, I was taught by Mr. Kimura. I thought that it is important to control how to feel in his lecture. I learned a lot of things today. I want to learn more in the rest of the time we have here. (Y.T H1)

Day 3 (August 1st)
Today, we had many exciting activities and some lectures. I really enjoyed the last two days and I will enjoy lectures from tomorrow as well. I have set some goals by myself, which were two topics. Firstly, I want to speak a long time with mentors, and secondly, would like to have lunch with mentors. I achieved the first aim, however, I couldn’t do the second one because the mentors didn’t have lunch at the dining hall that we use. I was very sad but I made a promise with mentors that we will have lunch together tomorrow. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s lunch. Anyway, we had some lectures today. First, we heard a guest speaker’s lecture. The story was about the design considering environment. I learned what is important when we design something and what we should do in this future. Furthermore, the guest speaker explained to us how to design some buildings. It was interesting and exciting. Secondly, we did two games: Lego exercise and making a spaghetti tower using marshmallow. These games needed many creative ideas and I had to explain my idea to other people. It was so hard and I learned many things. In conclusion, maybe tomorrow’s lecture will be more difficult and harder than today’s lecture. Therefore, I want to enjoy and learn more things and try many difficult goals. (A.M H1)

First, I wrote a letter to my past self. I wrote to the ten years old Kay. I was very shy and I couldn’t tell my friends what I really wanted to say. But six years later, I became a person who could tell my friends what I really want to say. I realized that since I became like this, I have less trouble with my friends. Second, we listened to Glenn Katz’s lecture. His lecture was about sustainability. Through listening to his lecture, I realized the importance of circulation, because he taught many examples of circulation to us. I think if human use Earth’s circulation well, problems which Earth has now will be improved. Third, we went on a campus tour with the mentors. We went to the top floor of the tower. The top of the tower was very cold because today was so windy. I also enjoyed conversations with a mentor. He explained to us about the structure of Stanford University in detail. I couldn’t imagine how large Stanford University is. If I was a Stanford University student, I would get lost every day. Fourth, we worked in a team. It was very difficult for me to come up with crazy ideas. I will do harder tomorrow. (K.O H1)

Today, I wrote a letter to 10-year-old me, listened to the lecture about sustainability, had a campus tour, built a spaghetti tower, and then we worked on a group project. First of all, in my letter for the 10-year-old me. I wrote about what I wanted to ask my past self. That is a rare opportunity, so I thought it was a valuable opportunity to expose myself. Second, I listened to the lecture about sustainability. The lecture was difficult for me but I thought I was able to understand. I heard that the lecturer understood the meaning of the words somehow in the reflection time today, therefore, I will try to use that tomorrow. Next, I had a campus tour. Stanford University campus was larger than I had imaged. It was so good for everyone to take group photos and I also liked the church. In addition, I built a spaghetti tower. I was disappointed because our spaghetti tower fell down just before the measurement time. Finally, I worked on a group project. I think it was good because our group was discussing concretely. I was pleased to be able to talk to people who did not speak much through this activity. Today, I talked to mentors many times and I felt I have improved compared to yesterday. I will continue working hard tomorrow! (S.H H1)

This morning I set my goal today to talk to Dr. Ong. I thought I wanted to ask about his research, but I couldn’t achieve my goal because I was not brave yesterday. After all the lectures today, I went to Dr. Ong to hear about his research. He told me a lot of things about himself. I asked him about his research, environmental engineering, He looked happy and his face filled with a smile. I felt happy that he really loved chemistry. He talked about chemistry and also his lecture was quite difficult, but I was able to understand because he explained it clearly. When I asked about my research on photocatalysts, it was good to know that his boss was a researcher on photocatalyst. Then he showed me his paper and his boss’s paper. It was interesting to see. So, I think I’ll read about them later. After he talked about environmental engineering, he showed me many pictures of Japanese food he took in Japan and the dishes he made. Therefore, I think he is very funny, and I want to talk to him more. And I want to enjoy talking more in the remaining time at Stanford University. (C.O H1)

Today was a nice day because I improved a lot. I have three reasons. The first reason is that I could ask some questions to mentors. They were very kind to me and gave me good advice. I followed their advice, my ideas got better. I am grateful to them. The second reason is that I could understand about the guest speaker’s presentation. My English grade is getting worse. Therefore, I had no confidence about my English now but I gained some confidence! Next time, I hope I can ask questions to guest speakers. The third reason is that I became close to one mentor, who is the youngest. I’m not good at talking with people who are younger or older than me. So, I was shy at first, but I plucked up some courage to talk with them. I can be friends with the junior mentor. I think that it is really good that I had some courage to talk to them. I set a goal today, which was to talk with some people in English with three or more sentences. It was easy for me and I achieved this goal, and I was able to do more things. Therefore, I want to set more difficult goals tomorrow and I’ll complete them. I will do my best tomorrow too! (K.M H1)
